This charming, leafy neighborhood at the foot of the
Oakland Hills has lots to recommend it, including
one-of-a-kind shops, enticing restaurants and a
conveniently located BART station.
College Avenue is packed with great places to eat, with new ones
opening all the time. Find contemporary Californian at Wood Tavern;
inventive Mediterranean at À Côté; and authentic Neapolitan pizzas,
pastas and more at A16. Superb Italian food is always on offer at
Oliveto Restaurant (its sister cafe is less formal but equally delicious)
and the highly rated Belotti Ristorante. Millennium Restaurant takes
vegan fare to new heights, Noodle Theory is popular for Asian fusion
dishes, and Zachary’s Chicago Pizza garners wild praise for its stuffed
pies. Enjoy Rockridge’s easygoing vibe while snacking on bakery
items and sandwiches at La Boulangerie’s inviting outdoor patio.
Start your shopping excursion at the centrally located Maison d’Etre,
which carries impeccably curated housewares and gifts. Across
the street is Rockridge Market Hall, a gastronomic emporium with
a mind-boggling array of gourmet goods, cheeses and prepared
foods. Several blocks down, Atomic Garden emphasizes sustainable
and artisanal gifts, home goods and apothecary items. Check the
calendar for author readings at the beloved East Bay Booksellers.
For stylish women’s wear, visit Bella Vita (the shop also has cool
clothing for kids), Hawthorn and FIT.
There’s no shortage of alehouses in this part of town,

George & Walt’s exude an older atmosphere, while
newer joints like Beer Baron Bar & Kitchen offer up
the latest craft beers. Brew lovers will also want to
try Mikkeller Tasting Room, a cool, artsy haunt with
a range of beers on tap. Want to work off those beer
calories? Head over to Upper Rockridge, where the
